WHY WOULD SOMEONE GET A TUMMY TUCK?

If you’re frustrated with a protruding abdomen, loose skin, or weakened core muscles, a tummy tuck can provide a solution. You might consider a tummy tuck if you:

  • Can’t Achieve a Flat Stomach with Exercise- despite your best efforts, your abdomen remains unchanged.
  • Experience Back Pain or Poor Posture- due to weakened abdominal muscles.
  • Feel Self-Conscious About Your Abdomen- you avoid certain activities or clothing due to your abdominal appearance.
  • Have Stretch Marks and Loose Skin that affect your self-esteem and body image.

Many women find that after pregnancy or significant weight loss, their abdomen doesn’t return to how it looked before.

BENEFITS OF A TUMMY TUCK

No more hiding behind loose-fitting clothes. Finally wear that swimsuit or fitted dress with confidence.

Feel more stable and supported during workouts or everyday tasks. Enjoy improved posture and reduced back pain.

Reclaim the body you once had, or achieve the body you’ve always wanted. Feel good about how you look and feel.

Eliminate the discomfort and irritation caused by excess skin. Move more freely and comfortably throughout your day.

HOW IS A TUMMY TUCK PERFORMED?

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a personalized surgical procedure tailored to your specific needs. During your consultation, Dr. Aycock will assess your abdominal area and discuss your goals.

The procedure typically involves an incision across the lower abdomen, just above the pubic area where it can be hidden by underwear or a bikini bottom. Dr. Aycock will then repair the abdominal muscles, remove excess skin and fat, and reshape the remaining tissue for a smoother contour. With a full tummy tuck, a second incision around the navel may be used to reposition it, or a new bellybutton may be created. With a mini tummy tuck, there is only mild extra skin, and the original belly button is reattached with no visible scar. Liposuction is often added to further refine the results. Dr. Aycock performs a drainless tummy tuck to make your recovery more comfortable with less scarring. Many plastic surgeons place drain tubes after a tummy tuck that pass out through the skin to collect fluid that builds up after surgery. The drain tubes create an extra scar, are quite uncomfortable and need to be emptied of body fluid several times a day. Instead of old fashioned drains, Dr. Aycock places an extra series of dissolvable internal stitches that prevents fluid buildup.

A Tummy Tuck Is Not A Weight-Loss Surgery

We understand that many people hope a tummy tuck will help them lose weight, but it’s important to clarify that this is a body contouring procedure, not a weight-loss surgery. It’s designed to address loose skin and muscle laxity, particularly after life changes like pregnancy or major weight loss. While you’re likely to see some change in your pant size, the primary goal is to reshape and tighten your abdomen. If you’re looking for weight loss support, we can discuss other options that might be more suitable for your needs.

Tummy Tuck with Liposuction

While a tummy tuck primarily addresses excess skin and muscle tightening, many patients find that combining it with liposuction enhances their overall results. Liposuction, when performed together with a tummy tuck, targets stubborn fat deposits that may remain in areas surrounding the abdomen, such as the “muffin top” area, under the bra line, or other localized pockets of fat that resist diet and exercise. This combined approach allows for maximum contouring, creating a smoother, more sculpted figure. Depending on your specific needs, liposuction can be targeted to specific areas or performed all the way around the midsection with 360 liposuction for the best outcome. Dr. Aycock will assess your individual needs during your consultation to determine the most suitable approach for your tummy tuck and liposuction combination.

I had the best experience with Dr. Aycock and her team. Dr. Aycock was super patient with all my questions and helped me understand the whole process from start to finish. She really listened to me and gave me the exact results that I was wanting. I couldn’t be happier! Thanks so much Dr. Aycock!

I had a large diastasis from my third pregnancy and significant amounts of extra skin. Dr. Aycock came highly recommended to me from medical colleague of mine. She took the time to answer all my questions and even recommended I wait on the surgery until my son was old enough to not need as much help. She wanted to set me up for a successful recovery rather than get the surgery done quickly. I appreciated that honesty. Dr. Aycock and her assistant Tracy were so helpful in the days leading up to the surgery and all the questions that came about in my recovery. I am really happy with the results and thankful I was able to have this done!

FAQ ABOUT TUMMY TUCK

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) and liposuction are both body contouring procedures, but they address different concerns and achieve distinct results.  Liposuction is primarily designed to remove localized deposits of excess fat.  It’s ideal for refining areas where fat is resistant to diet and exercise — for example bra line (“side boob”), flanks (“muffin top”) or outer thighs (“saddlebags”). A tummy tuck, on the other hand, focuses on removing excess skin and tightening weakened or separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti). It’s particularly effective for addressing changes caused by pregnancy or significant weight loss. While liposuction can be added to a tummy tuck to enhance contouring, they are fundamentally different procedures. Liposuction is about fat removal, while a tummy tuck is about skin and muscle correction.

A tummy tuck procedure, performed under general anesthesia in a surgical setting, generally starts at approximately $16,000, with the final cost influenced by the complexity and extent of your unique needs. We believe in complete transparency, so during your consultation, Dr. Aycock’s team will provide a detailed quote and discuss all financial options, including our financing solutions, to ensure you feel confident moving forward.

The results of a tummy tuck are designed to be long-lasting, but maintaining them depends on several factors. Once Dr. Aycock removes excess skin and tightens your abdominal muscles, you’ll see a significant and lasting improvement in your abdominal contour. However, it’s crucial to maintain a stable weight after your procedure. Significant weight fluctuations, particularly from pregnancy, can stretch the skin and muscles again, potentially altering your results. A healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and a balanced diet, will help you preserve your new shape. While the natural aging process will continue, the improvements from your tummy tuck should be noticeable for many years.

You’ll notice an immediate change in your abdominal contour after a tummy tuck, but it’s important to understand that the final results will unfold gradually. Initially, swelling and bruising are common, and these will subside over the first few weeks. A significant improvement will be visible within a few weeks, and most patients feel comfortable returning to light activities within 2-4 weeks. However, complete healing and the full realization of your results can take several months, typically up to six months or even a year. As the swelling diminishes and your tissues settle, your abdomen will become smoother and more defined. Patience is key during this period, and Dr. Aycock will provide detailed post-operative instructions to support your healing process.  You will need to retone your stretched abdominal muscles with exercise and we guide you through a gradual advancement of core strengthening to get the best results.

Diastasis recti, the separation of the abdominal muscles, is a common condition, particularly after pregnancy. This condition often results in a protruding belly that doesn’t respond to regular exercise. You might suspect you have it if you notice a bulge or “doming” in your midsection when you strain your abdominal muscles, such as when doing a sit-up or lifting your head while lying down.  You may also feel a gap between your abdominal muscles when you press your fingers along the midline of your abdomen, from your breastbone down to your navel. While a self-check can give you a general idea, a proper diagnosis requires an examination by a medical professional. Dr. Aycock can assess your abdominal muscles during a consultation to determine if you have diastasis recti and discuss appropriate treatment options.
